New LC Subject Heading ‘White privilege (Social structure)’ approved and ‘Primitive societies’ removed

Tēnā koutou Some good news for a rainy Friday (at least here in Te Whanganui a Tara). The June 2022 list of new and changed subject headings approved by Library of Congress has just been posted: https://classweb.org/approved-subjects/2206.html Of particular note, the subject heading White privilege (Social structure)<https://lccn.loc.gov/sh2022005885> is now available for use. It has taken nearly 15 years for this term to be approved – please see the Cataloging Lab<https://cataloginglab.org/kb/white-privilege/> if you are interested in the history of this proposal. Please also note that the inappropriate term ‘Primitive societies’ has been deleted, to be replaced by the subject headings Anthropology<https://lccn.loc.gov/sh85005581> and Prehistoric peoples<https://lccn.loc.gov/sh85080302>. While ‘Prehistoric peoples’ still seems problematic (as it implies some peoples lack history), it is great to see that ‘Primitive societies’ has been removed. Kia ora koutou We are still seeking content to include in the upcoming issue of Catapul<https://lianza.org.nz/resources/describenz/catapult/>t. It’s no secret cataloguers tend to be a shy breed and while they don’t like to talk about themselves, we do love to hear about each other, so don’t hesitate to volunteer to be featured in the next cataloguer profile where you will have the opportunity to share what your job is like and/or the interesting projects going on at your institution! 😊 Even if you’re not a cataloguer, we would still love to hear from anyone in technical services, systems, archives, etc. Please get in touch by Friday 19 August if you have something in mind, and send in final submissions by 26 August.
