Enhanced bibliographic records on the NUC

Upgraded records As part of the Maximising Te Puna Value programme, the National Library of New Zealand recently made available in the National Union Catalogue (NUC) its back files of pre-publication ISSN and ISBN records. We will continue to add these records and Cataloguing-in-Publication (CiP) records to the NUC as part of our standard workflow. All of these records are for resources that fit the scope of the New Zealand National Bibliography: http://nznuc-cataloguing.pbworks.com/w/page/57060042/Scope%20of%20the%20New… The National Library is now offering monthly MARC files of bibliographic records that have been upgraded to full records on the NUC. The files include: · records that were previously ISSN or ISBN or ISMN pre-publication records * records that were previously CiP records * records that were previously short records added by other libraries Libraries will be able to use these MARC files to upgrade in their local systems short bibliographic records that they have brought in previously from the NUC. These records are only for material in scope for the New Zealand National Bibliography. The files are available on the National Library website at http://beta.natlib.govt.nz/librarians/te-puna/te-puna-records Tables of Contents (TOCs) Since 2010 cataloguers at the National Library of New Zealand have been adding table of contents information to records for New Zealand published material in accordance with the policy available on the DescribeNZ wiki: http://nznuc-cataloguing.pbworks.com/w/page/38345509/National%20Library%20o… A recent project to add TOCs to New Zealand and Pacific monographs published between 2005 and 2009 resulted in nearly 2000 TOCs being added to bibliographic records on the NUC. Ten Dewey-sequenced MARC files have been created and libraries will be able to use these MARC files to upgrade bibliographic records in their local systems that they have previously brought in from the NUC. The MARC files of these records are available on the National Library website at http://beta.natlib.govt.nz/librarians/te-puna/te-puna-records Book awards The National Library of New Zealand has been addding notes to bibliographic records when a publication is the winner of a major New Zealand book award e.g. the New Zealand Post Book Awards. A MARC file of these records has been created and libraries will be able to use them to upgrade bibliographic records in their local systems that they have previously brought in from the NUC. RDA for non-cataloguers

CatSIG RDA Seminars

Apologies for cross-posting. Thank you to everyone who attended an RDA seminar at the end of last month. We were very fortunate in having Barbara Tillett as our key speaker. The feedback from the Palmerston North and Dunedin groups has been very positive. The Auckland group also had a great atmosphere, but as we didn't deliver their evaluation forms until after the seminar, we haven't heard back from people yet. The main issue identified was the time constraints in Palmerston North which limited the opportunities for discussion. There are two main messages that came through, both at the seminars and in your evaluation forms. 1. People would like more practical engagement with RDA. The activity that involved examining records was very well-received. 1. One size will not fit all when it comes to RDA training. Libraries vary in the amount of original cataloguing versus copy-cataloguing that they do. They vary in their use of the MARC format. They vary in the ways they are able to interact with their library system, and the best time to think about moving to a new cataloguing standard also varies from library to library. So where to from here? 1. The three National Library cataloguing team leaders are definitely attending the National Library of Australia's RDA Train the Trainer course in early November. This will provide us with training and materials that we could use to offer some form of RDA training in New Zealand, depending on all those variables I mentioned above. 2. The first impact of RDA that is affecting libraries is the increase in the number of RDA records coming in to the NUC from OCLC. I will send a separate email, after Labour Weekend, to start some discussion about how different libraries are dealing with RDA records at present. I'm hoping that this discussion can lead to the development of factsheets or guidelines that we can all use during this transition period. I will be on leave next week, but back again after Labour Weekend to continue this work. If people have thoughts about RDA training please do send them to this list or directly to me if you prefer. Library of Congress New Bibliographic Framework Initiative: Update Forum http://www.loc.gov/today/cyberlc/feature_wdesc.php?rec=5605 Speaker: Eric Miller Co-Founder and President of Zepheira The Library of Congress has contracted with Zepheira to help accelerate the launch of the Bibliographic Framework Initiative. The new bibliographic framework project will be focused on the Web environment, Linked Data principles and mechanisms, and the Resource Description Framework (RDF) as a basic data model. Zepheira, led by Eric Miller, has been active in the development of Semantic Web and library standards as well as open source tools to support linked data technologies and library applications. Zepheira will provide both a model (or models) to serve as a starting point for discussion and an analysis of related initiatives. The Library anticipates an iterative process, drawing from feedback from the community, and a subsequent progression of requirements. The stated goals are a flexible bibliographic framework, a robust reference code, a supporting infrastructure for deployment, and an effective migration plan from MARC to a new framework.
