Dear colleagues, We're planning the March issue of Catapult and are looking for your contributions! The tentative theme is 'future-forward'- as inspired by Kevin Ford's recent visit and his talk on BIBFRAME. (Reminder- the webcast is still available to view here: http://webcast.gigtv.com.au/Mediasite/Catalog/catalogs/lianza-catsig) Do you have views on RDF, BIBFRAME, linked data, the future of the library catalogue and cataloguing, or examples of how your library is planning or has implemented new systems? Also, on a broader tangent - if you've read something interesting, started a new role, attended a workshop or completed a cataloguing project and would like to share, we'd love to include it too. The Bibliographic Framework Initiative (BIBFRAME) is such a development, which is intended to be a replacement for MARC and to serve as a general model for expressing and connecting bibliographic data utilizing Linked Data principles. This workshop gives a brief overview of Linked Data and describes the BIBFRAME Linked Data model and how it compares to other efforts to model bibliographic data, such as FRBR. It also provides an overview of the BIBFRAME vocabulary, which is used to describe bibliographic resources as Linked Data compatible statements. It reviews the development of BIBFRAME to date, looking at tools, such as the MARC to BIBFRAME transformation tool and the BIBFRAME Editor and current experimentation. Instructor Bio: Rebecca Guenther has 35 years of experience in national libraries, primarily working on library technology standards related to digital libraries. She has a bachelors’ degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin and a Masters of Science from Simmons College of Library Science. She started her career at the National Library of Medicine as a cataloger and later moved to the Library of Congress. Most of her professional life has been at the Library of Congress developing national and international standards related to metadata, including MARC, MODS, PREMIS, METS, and ISO language codes. She has served on numerous standards and implementation committees, several as chair, is widely published in professional literature, and has given many tutorials, workshops and presentations. She is currently living in New York, working remotely for the Library of Congress on MODS, PREMIS, LC's Linked Data Service, and the Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative. In addition she is an adjunct professor in NYU's Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program and does consulting on metadata issues. Apologies for cross posting The Hikuwai Region is delighted to announce that they are once again holding a Weekend School on the 28th and 29th May 2016 at the fabulous Distinction Whangarei in Northland. Please note these dates in your calendars. We will be developing a relevant programme for all library sectors that is based on the Bodies of Knowledge required for Professional Registration and with this in mind we would like to open the call for presenters. What are we looking for? Presentations, workshops, panel discussions or posters. Either a 20 minute presentation for the half hour sessions or a 45 minute presentation for the one hour sessions. We welcome proposals covering all professional sectors on a range of topics including but not limited to: ● Community connections - outreach and offsite activities, pop-up libraries ● Digital - Bringing digital experiences to our users, and becoming confident in the digital world. ● Collaborating about stack collections ● Future of libraries ● Writing and presenting for conference ● Mentoring ● Leadership - Kotuku Leadership programme ● Children’s literature and holiday programmes ● Research in libraries ● Any other ideas Presenters are expected to register and participate in the whole of the Weekend School. Future of Libraries

Forwarded on behalf of Ines Almeida <ines(a)lianza.org.nz> OPEN ACCESS - Dear Friends and Colleagues, The Future of Libraries has resulted in four workstreams - and a sector wide focus on Open Access is one of these. As we've begun to think about how to approach this we've realised that while library and information professionals believe that Open Access is a critical driver of innovation - many outside our sector still need to be convinced. Therefore phase one of this work will be to develop a clear economic argument for Open Access. We're looking for individuals who are interested in helping us build the case for Open Access. Key deliverables: 1) Literature review of work defining the benefits of Open Access 2) Case studies analysing the effects and impacts of the bolder "Open" initiatives - such as the Dutch exiting Elsevier. Have these had the positive effects "Open" champions were hoping for? 3) An analysis of the current situation - what does "Open" really cost? Who is bearing this? What are the barriers? What are the incentives? As you can see we have tentatively defined three overarching deliverables - and at this stage we need people who believe they can contribute strongly to analysing the current environment and building a strong economic argument for Open Access. We are hoping that this initial phase of work will be completed by August 2016. Prior to joining AVP, Kevin was a NoSQL semantics specialist at MarkLogic and, before that, Kevin was at the Library of Congress where he worked in the Network Development and MARC Standards Office. He was key member of the LC group shepherding the Library's Bibliographic Framework Initiative, which will ultimately replace the MARC Communication Formats with a semantic model. Kevin was also the project manager for the Library of Congress's Linked Data service, http://id.loc.gov. Below is an abstract for Kevin's presentation at VALA There's An Ambiguous Road Sign that Reads 'bibframe' and a Fork in the Road. Do You Take It? The Bibframe ontology contains minimally 3 forks, independent projects begun with a copy of an existing project and no assumption that changes in the new fork can be merged with its root. What produced this fragmentation? Are differences reconcilable? If so, by what means? If not, what are the alternatives? Is Bibframe's stricture to produce a single RDF model causing more problems than it solves? This talk will explore these questions, discussing how this fragmented reality emerged when the primary - if not singular - objective is to create a data model and format the library community could embrace with the same fidelity MARC has enjoyed for nearly 50 years.
