Technological Singularity

The technological singularity is the idea that when machines become more intelligent than humans, they will be able to augment themselves at an exponentially increasing rate: machines that are smarter than humans would be able to re-design themselves to be even smarter making them even better at re-designing themselves to be even smarter and so on. In science fiction, this inevitably leads to a conflict between humans and the now super-intelligent machines (e.g. The Matrix, The Terminator, Battlestar Galactica).

However, I think that not only will such an ever-increasing intelligence not develop, but that it is impossible for it to develop because of an absolute limit on intelligence.
