  • Here is a GSM_Location_Update_Sequence_Diagram.pdf that shows the exchange of messages for an example scenario in the US; there are signaling messages exchanged at the wireless communications (physical) layer but pay specific attention to the messages sent/received by the HLR and VLRs.
