Definitions of a Thesis from the Statutes in the University Calendar

The requirements and expectations of Master's theses and PhD theses are different. Both kinds of thesis are an outcome of independent research carried out under supervsion. In both cases, a successful student will have learned about how to conduct research in their field. However, the PhD thesis must have a significant and original contribution; this novelty and contribution may be desirable for a Master's thesis, but is not a requirement.

Master's Thesis Definition:

PCSS Section 19:
A Master’s thesis is the outcome of independent research, scholarship, and/or creative activity conducted under supervision and having a value of at least 90 points. For works of design, creation or performance, the student should include a written commentary on the work.

PhD Thesis Definition:

PhD Statute, sections 4 and 6:
  1. The course of study for a PhD consists of a programme of research and the completion of a thesis carried out under supervision as set out in the Doctoral Policy.
  2. The thesis must be a body of work that demonstrates the candidate's ability to carry out independent research, and constitutes a significant and original contribution to knowledge or understanding. This contribution may include critical, experimental, theoretical or creative components, but the end result must be a single integrated study.
