This information applies to COMP501/589 and AIML501/589.

This is the Research Report /Literature Review connected to the capstone project course in the Computer Science COMP589 and Artificial Intelligence AIML589. By completing these courses, you should be able to:

  1. show evidence of advanced knowledge about Computer Science / Artificial Intelligence
  2. demonstrate mastery of sophisticated theoretical subject matter
  3. evaluate critically the findings and discussions in the literature (501)
  4. research, analyse and argue from evidence (589)
  5. work independently and apply knowledge to new situations (589 & 501)
  6. engage in rigorous intellectual analysis, criticism and problem-solving. (589)

Requirements

COMP501/AIML501:
  • You must submit a final literature review report. The length of the report should not exceed 10,000 words.

COMP589/AIML589:
  • You must submit a final report. The length of the report should not exceed 15,000 words. If you combine the 501 and 589 reports into a single report, the report should not exceed 25,000 words.
  • You should deliver a 15-minute presentation for your 589 project.
  • You are highly recommended to submit a project proposal and the project progress report.

Marking Guide

The thesis will be marked holistically rather than as the summation of a rubric. However, we have areas that your marker will refer to when deciding a grade.

These areas are:

  1. Literature and background (501): Concisely outlines the important concepts/aspects of the thesis. Provides a substantial and judicious review of the literature and the state of the art.
  2. Implementation (589): Provides a sensible and well-crafted solution to the problem given in the thesis. Provides clear evidence of novel contributions within the context of existing academic research.
  3. Evaluation (589): Describes experiments, tests or simulations in sufficient detail that they could be reproduced. You should use scientific experiments (e.g. to make critical observations) and mathematical rigour where appropriate (e.g. a proof of correctness).
  4. Critical thinking (501/589): Understands technical issues from different perspectives; appreciates limitations of the method developed; considers how the method could be further improved.
  5. Written communication (501/589): includes, not limited to: overall report structure; spelling and grammar; consistent bibliography layout including all necessary information; presentation and layout of figures and tables; minimum requirements of written English.

The Oral presentation is the chance for you to demonstrate to the markers that you understand your subject area. Sometimes while writing, we can fail to explain the work that has been done or confuse the reader. The Oral is a chance to answer questions that may not have been well answered in the report itself.

If you submit a combined report, please submit the combined one to the 589 submission link.

Timeline

You should meet your supervisors regularly, around once a week.

Doing both 501 and 589 in one Trimester:
  • Week 1: Project Selection & Allocation
  • Week 3: COMP/AIML 589 project proposal due
  • End of mid-trimester break: COMP/AIML 589 progress report due
  • Week 11: Draft should be submitted to the supervisor(s)
  • First exam week (i.e., week 14): Final COMP/AIML 589 submission
Doing 501 and 589 across two Trimesters:

COMP/AIML 501:
