Technical Note - Accessing SCS or ITS Files

Summary

This technical note describes for students how to access their VUW Student Computing Service (SCS) files from within SMS or ECS. This same mechanism is used for accessing these files from home or for staff to access their ITS home directory.

Details

After logging in to MSOR/ECS (and perhaps also logging in to a Windows server - ward or somes) perform the following steps:
  1. Open a browser (e.g. Firefox or Internet Explorer)
  2. Browse to:
    1. Students - https://www.victoria.ac.nz/myworkspace/student/
    2. Staff - https://www.victoria.ac.nz/myworkspace/staff/
  3. Log in using your ITS username.
  4. To upload a file:
    1. Click on the Browse button
    2. This should open the file directory on your local system
    3. Browse your directory and select the file that you wish to save to your Workspace
    4. Click the Open button and the file path name appears in the box next to the browse button
    5. Click the Upload button to save this file to your Workspace
    6. Please be prepared to wait up to 1 - 2 minutes for very large files (dependent on your connection speed)
  5. To download a file:
    1. In your Workspace window, you should see a list of files and folders stored in your workspace
    2. Browse to the file name in this area then click on it
    3. Please be prepared to wait up to 1 - 2 minutes for very large files (dependent on your connection speed)
    4. The file will open within your browser
    5. Save the file into your preferred personal folder

NOTE that workspace files cannot be deleted (but can be overwritten) from non-SCS computers

Also note that only a single file at a time can be transferred. If you wish to upload a large number of files, consider using a zip archive, which will convert a collection of files into a single .zip file.
