Research Interests

My main area of research is Applied Cognitive Systems. Essentially, how to use inspiration from natural intelligence to enable computers/machines/robots to behave usefully.

This includes:

  • Cognitive Robotics
  • Learning Classifier Systems (a branch of evolutionary computation) and
  • Modern Heuristics for industrial application.

Industrial and business links have been through doctorate studies (four years with British Steel/Corus), postdoctoral work (three years with British Aluminium/Alcoa) and applied research work (Knowledge Transfer Partnerships). Experience and expertise in Rolling Mills, along with application of Artificial Intelligence techniques, heuristics and modern information technology systems to real-world problems has led to successful project outcomes.

Blue skies research includes analogues of emotions, abstraction, memory systems, small worlds phenomenon, confusion/dissonance and machine consciousness.
