Biography

I am a computer scientist with four years of research and three years of university teaching experience. I did B.Sc. Computer Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, Pakistan in 2006. Then I completed my MS (Software Engineering) from the same university in 2010. Before commencing my PhD at Victoria University of Wellington in April 2011, I worked as Lecturer in Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, Pakistan for three years.

PhD Thesis

Semantic association computation is the process of automatically quantifying the strength of a semantic connection between two textual units based on various lexical and semantic relations such as hyponymy (car and vehicle) and functional associations (bank and manager). Humans have an innate ability to infer implicit relationships between two textual units based on their knowledge about the world and their ability to reason about that knowledge. Automatically imitating this behaviour is limited by restricted domain specific knowledge, poor ability to infer hidden relations and lack of common sense. My PhD research aimed at exploiting semantic capabilities of Wikipedia in automatically computing semantic associations of words and using these associations in supporting natural language processing applications.
