Victoria University of Wellington's PhD is a 3–4 year research project leading to a substantial dissertation. This is the model used in the UK and many Commonwealth countries. It is an enormous advantage to have done a Masters degree before starting the PhD.

All PhD applications must be made through the Faculty of Graduate Research. The Faculty of Graduate Research website provides application forms, details of available funding, and application methods. For PhD students, the admission applications and scholarship applications use the same online system (see How to Apply), and there are three application deadlines per year: 1 March, 1 July and 1 November.

Before making a formal application you should identify which of our staff work in the area closest to your interests and contact them, as a potential supervisor, to discuss your research direction. When you approach them it would be good to have an idea of how your expertise would fit with theirs to produce a PhD project that is of benefit to and plays to the strengths of both parties.

We have scholarships available through CMIC PhD Scholarships, through the Weta Digital PhD Scholarship in Computer Graphics and through Victoria Doctoral Scholarships.

Postgraduate (Masters)

Computer Science

Our School of Engineering and Computer Science offers postgraduate degrees in either Computer Science or Computer Graphics.

The Master of Science (MSc) is research-focussed. It is usually two years long, with a year of taught courses and a year-long project. Alternatively, for those who already have a taught postgraduate degree, the MSc can be a one year programme: a single year-long project.

We offer other one-year postgraduate degrees that can subsequently lead to an MSc: Bachelor of Science with Honours (BSc(Hons)) or Postgraduate Diploma in Science (PGDipSc).

We also offer a Master of Computer Science (MCompSc) degree, an intensive twelve-month course with eight taught courses and a four-month research project.

Students who wish to apply for the Master of Science programme are also eligible to apply for a CMIC Masters Scholarship.

Animation and Visual Effects

The University's Miramar Creative Centre, located near the main sites of the Weta group of companies, offers a twelve-month Master of Design Technology.

Our School of Design offers a Master of Design (MDes) and a Master of Design Innovation (MDT).

Undergraduate (Bachelors)

Computer Science

Our School of Engineering and Computer Science offers a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in either Computer Science or Computer Graphics. The computer graphics programme combines courses from computer science, animation and visual effects, and mathematics, alongside specialist courses in computer graphics.

Animation and Visual Effects

Our School of Design offers a Bachelor of Design Innovation (BDI) in Animation and Visual Effects.
