Tutorials

What are the Integrated Engineering Tutorials all about?

The Integrated Tutorials are held in the B lab sessions (W - F) during lecture weeks only. They are two hour tutorials with a break in the middle.

The basic idea is that these tutorial exercises are designed to help you link the ideas in all of your first year papers together. So, for example, we will work on a tutorial exercise about sound and how human hearing is related to sound technology. This will link ideas from ENGR 101, ENGR 121, COMP 102, and other first year papers to some extent. The tutorial on images and RGB will link ideas from ENGR 101 to material you will use next term in CGRA and COMP 103 as well as COMP 102 this term.

We hope the tutorials will be fun and that you will learn quite a lot about how the material you are learning in your other papers fits together.

There may be last minute changes to the tutorial exercises. For example, if we find a lot of students are struggling with an idea from the maths classes, we may make up an exercise to help with that. Similarly, if we judge that students are most in need of time extra time to work on a difficult assignment, we may use the tutorial time as a general help session. A few of the tutorial exercises are designed to help you prepare for a particular test.

How it works

The tutorial exercises will usually be available on the web page in advance but preparation is generally not expected (but please read the first tut in advance). When you arrive in CO145 for your tutorial, just download the exercise from the web page, work on it, and submit through the online submission system as a PDF. If you want to include hand-written material, just take a photo and insert it.

The tutorial submissions are worth 10% of the total marks for the course. See the course outline for more details about grades and course requirements.

Missing a session

We will assign students to tutorial sessions, making an effort to group students with similar interests and backgrounds where possible. As such, it is important for you to attend your assigned tutorial each week. But if you cannot attend your assigned session in a particular week due to extenuating circumstances, email Howard Lukefahr to arrange an alternate time.
